Ways to help out during the holidays…..but contributors be aware…

Despite the economy’s downturn, people are looking for creative or small ways to give back and support those less fortunate during the holidays.

Charities value how you give as well as what you give. Here are some ways to donate over the holidays:

Give items. Whether coats, toys or canned goods, make sure donated items are in good condition and recipient charities are accepting such items.

Give when you shop. Cause-related marketing is an option for those small businesses that choose to help a charity while generating good will for the company. Many charities partner with businesses that donate portions of item sales to worthy causes. Check if promotions identify actual or anticipated amounts charities receive. If you are asked to add donations to your receipt, or embedded giving, determine if the embedded promotion states which specific charities receive collected funds.

Give online. Many Charities are using new technology, such as social media to engage donors at a grass-roots level. Before entering personal information online, however, thoroughly review websites, look for the organization’ privacy policies and confirm that appropriate security measures are in place.

Give through text messaging. Text donations are added to your cell phone bill. Keep in mind actual money can take months to reach the charity, so consider donating directly through the charity’s Web Site if there is immediate need.

Give your time. If you do not have the money, give your time volunteering to help support charities. You can also help raise awareness on your Facebook page or blog.

As you give, beware of:

High pressure tactics to give money immediately.

Reluctance to answer questions or provide financial documents

Names closely resembling those of well-known organizations.

Fraudulent phone appeals offering sweepstakes opportunities and requests for donations to claim prizes.

Requests for cash or checks made out to individuals.

Appeals disguised as bills or invoices.

Research charities thoroughly beforehand. You can get a list of BBB Accredited Charities and/or reliability reports by visiting www.bbb.org or calling Amy at 260-918-2069 or 800-552-4631 ext. 324. BBB Accredited Charities have the option of using our BBB Accredited Charity Seal. Look for the BBB Charity Seal on solicitations and web sites, this indicates that the charity meets your BBB’s 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
