Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana

It started as an emergency food distribution operation from the beds of pick-up trucks to bring food aid to the workers impacted by the closure of the International Harvester plant. However, over the last 28 years, Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana has grown into the largest single provider of charitable food resources to over 470 pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and other member agencies in northeast Indiana.

This sophisticated food distribution operation distributes nearly ten million pounds of food to over 90,000 unduplicated people annually. That's 15% of the population in the nine county area CHB serves. Half of the food distributed is via direct service programs that address childhood hunger, older adult hunger and healthy eating initiatives. With the core value of treating the clients and food with dignity and utilizing sound business principles, CHFB serves as a safe and reliable food source for families struggling to put food on the table and the agencies they go to for help.

As an award-winning member of Feeding America, the nation’s largest charity dedicated to domestic hunger relief, Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana is dedicated to reducing hunger by 50% by the year 2015. The goal is to make sure that as much high quality, locally produced and/or donated, and nutritionally dense food as possible is distributed to those who need it most. The food is there, just waiting to be utilized. Together we can all make that goal a reality.

Your BBB of Northern Indiana is conducting a food drive for Community Harvest Food bank through January 2011. If the response is good, we will continue beyond that date. We encourage you to stop by our office at 4011 Parnell Avenue and donate your food items. You may want to place a notice in your break room, on your bulletin boards, or Intranet and have a designated person drop the items off have several have been collected. Let’s see what we can do to fill hungry stomachs!
